A New Way to View New Year's Resolutions
posted by: Aaron Barker on January 24, 2018 at 11:18 AM
Image result for new years resolution

Growing up, New Year’s Eve was not a big deal to me; it was simply the turning of the clock and the beginning of another month.  As I got older and learned the value of a good mulligan, the holiday took on another meaning; one that is stoked each time “Auld Lang Syne” is sung by groups of friends.

I suppose these feelings aren’t exclusive to only me.  Ask anyone what their New Year’s resolutions are and you’ll hear myriad answers ranging from weight loss to being a better person or parent to working less or even making more money. Don’t wait too long to ask that icebreaker, though; statistics say that the majority of New Year's resolutions - 80% - will be broken by the second week of February.  It’s a tough break for those of us who were looking forward to the refreshing New Year celebration and the chance to start over once again.

What if we looked at New Years in a different light?  What if we made a conscious decision to reach towards specific life goals rather than yearly ones?
Paul the Apostle shows us his heart in Philippians 3:12-14:
“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus,” (emphasis mine).
What is it that Paul wants to make his own?  Something so amazing must be on his mind that he is forgetting all that he has accomplished and is reaching towards the future.  In the preceding verses he tells us his life goal:
“Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord,” (vs. 3, emphasis mine).
Paul was not only willing but desired to count everything in his life as a complete loss just to know Jesus Christ in the power of His resurrection.  Having this aspiration came from a deep gratitude towards our Savior because Jesus gave His own life to make us His own possession.
This is the very reason why we strive to make ourselves better; not because we would look great in that black dress; not because our retirement fund could use some extra dollars.  Self-improvement is taking the talents God has sovereignly given us and honing them to become useful tools for His glory.
Beloved, let us not be so short-sighted that we look only to yearly goals.  Rather, let our hearts gravitate in the direction of becoming more like our Savior every day.  Jesus Christ has redeemed us and adopted us into His family so that our lives would be a shining example of the surpassing glory of God.  Regardless of your position in life, press towards the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Let today be the day we shift our thinking from ourselves to Christ-honoring, God-focused, radical Christian living.

Soli Deo Gloria,

Children's Christmas Adventure
posted by: Aaron Barker on December 08, 2017 at 4:08 PM

The  Boone County Businessmen’s Association working with the Boone County Board of Education, in  cooperation with Potter’s Ranch brought much holiday cheer and happiness to children in need this past week as they worked together to present the annual Children’s Christmas Adventure.

Each year the Boone County Board of Education chooses one elementary school in the Boone County district in particular need of some Christmas hope.  This year it was 56 children from Collins Elementary who were chosen and brought to the Ranch Lodge where they were provided a hot meal, great music, and homemade cookies straight from our kitchen.

As part of the program, the Boone County Businessman’s Association supplied brand new coats and gloves to all of the children in attendance.  In addition, Potter’s Ranch gifted the boys in attendance with remote controlled cars, while the young ladies received beautiful teddy bears.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the True History of Christmas.  Presented this year by Sandra (Tim) Cook, our guests heard the wonderful recitation of the first Christmas as recorded in the Bible.

A great benefit of having the celebration here at the Ranch is the ability to talk about the true Reason for the Season – Jesus Christ.

Since this was my first Christmas Adventure as a member of the staff, it was awesome to serve alongside selfless individuals watching how their actions truly showed the love of Christ.

There is always much excitement around the Christmas Adventure since it is a great opportunity to serve our community.  No one can deny that all of those involved truly appreciate these special moments of service.

“It’s our favorite event of the year,” remarked Carlin Adams, a member of our maintenance and grounds team for 15 years.  This was most certainly evident as anyone would be humbled observing the staff working together – giving of their own time – to serve food, drinks, and bus tables.

Although Christmas is about more than gifts, the ability to fill a need –especially for a child – helps to extend hope for a bright future.  Remember that all we do for others during Advent is a way for the light of the Gospel to shine brightly to all who are watching us.

Big Thanksgiving Plans?
posted by: Aaron Barker on November 20, 2017 at 3:46 PM
Let us not forget what we are truly thankful for - that Jesus Christ came to this earth and died for the sins of those who would believe.  Our greatest problem of sin was solved. "For our sake [God] made [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God," 2 Cor. 5:21.

Happy Thanksgiving from our families to yours.

Maintenance Updates

Even though it’s getting cold around here the outside work and maintenance doesn’t stop.  Most of the work can be done for Lifegroup and Eagle Scout projects

We’re currently looking for someone with landscaping knowledge to assist with Lodge area grounds.  Also in need of some folks who are good with a hammer and carpentry work as we have several building projects on the agenda for this winter.

Let us know if you would like to help out by sending an email to info@pottersranch.org with ‘Volunteer Opportunities” in the subject line.

The Admin's Desk
posted by: Aaron Barker on November 17, 2017 at 1:35 PM

Hello, my name is Aaron Barker, Administrative Director here at Potter’s Ranch.  The year isn’t over yet and we are already overwhelmed with how gracious the Lord has been to the Ranch.

Our Garden Gala was such a huge success and provided a humbling blessing to us as we saw our wonderful sponsors continue to bless God’s work here. Not only that, but our 20th Anniversary Festival saw the Potter’s Ranch branching out to a wider audience in hopes of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with even more people.

Let me begin by saying that it has been humbling to work with such a dedicated group of individuals laboring together to bring glory to our God. Watching the Ranch staff and committee members go above and beyond to ensure the success of the Ranch’s seminal 20th year milestone has inspired and excited my heart to see the ministry of Potter’s Ranch reach a new generation for Christ.

Our Director’s Cabin is now open for families and groups to use for lodging. This a very exciting development as it has never been available to the public.  If you would like to reserve this, give me a call to check availability.

An exciting 2018 is definitely on the horizon as we look to expand the ministry reach and goals of Potter’s Ranch; will you join with us in prayer as these opportunities are planned and finalized?

Would you like to be involved in what the Lord is doing here?  Of course you do, so let’s get you in touch with the right people who need some help.  Send an email to info@pottersranch.org with ‘Volunteer Opportunities” in the subject line.

Thanks to all who have supported us by praying, donating, lodging, and telling others; it’s certainly our blessing to serve you.

In Christ
